Digging a Doocot in Lochend Park, Edinburgh

A project investigating the Heritage of Lochend Park in the northeast of the City of Edinburgh has been initiated by the voluntary group ‘Friends of Lochend Park’. The park is one of many green spaces owned and managed by The City of Edinburgh Council. It has a rich heritage and Lochend House which is built on the site of Lochend Castle bounds the park on the east side. The land now within the park would have formed part of the landscape and gardens of the castle and Lochend House. A doocot constructed in the 16th century- which would have provided pigeon meat for the residents of the castle- is located within the park. Earlier this month Rubicon Heritage collaborated with The Friends of Lochend Park and the Archaeology Service and Parks Department of the City of Edinburgh Council to carry out archaeological work within the doocot. A floor surface which may date to the 19th century, when the building was used as a boat-house by the Royal Humane Society, was revealed. It is hoped that further work investigating the heritage of the park will be carried out within 2015. The Friends of Lochend Park have a Facebook page which we recommend you check out here.
